Workshop - Sorbetto Top in a Day

Sorbetto Top in a Day

Sorbetto Top in a Day

Date/Time
27/05/2017 10:00 am - 6:00 pm

maria loves how much you can learn about dressmaking in one day, whilst making a sorbetto tank top – one of the most popular modern patterns.

Skill level: capable sewer*

This is the perfect workshop for anyone  who has completed several simple projects & gained confidence with using a sewing machine. You will also be getting familiar with the language of sewing & ideally know what we mean by selvedge, grainline, seam allowance etc.

The Sorbetto Tank Top is a free pattern from one of the most established & respected of the ‘new’ pattern companies – Colette Patterns. You only have to type the words into Pinterest or Instagram to see how popular this top has been. There are also hundreds of blogs with great pattern hacks & variations that will keep you inspired for months!

We will stick closely to the original pattern for this workshop, with the options of inverting the pleat (instead of the box pleat) & increasing the finished length.

It’s a great first top to make as a wearable toile* as a guide for other top patterns as it will help you identify your personal preferences with regards to the neckline, armholes, length & side bust dart fit. (*As a wearable toile it may not turn out to be the best of fits but it will be wearable & you will very easily be able to copy & adjust it to make a second top that fits just as you wish).

The workshop will include the following techniques:

  • Simple pattern laying & cutting (just 2 pattern pieces)
  • Finishing with French seams
  • Sewing darts
  • Sew a box or inverted pleat
  • Using binding to finish the neck & sleeves
  • Hemming

At the end of the workshop you will leave with a finshed sorbetto top, your personal pattern pieces & instructions, knowledge of several dress making techniques & the inspiration to make many more variations of this top.

You will need to bring 1.5m of light or medium weight cotton dress making fabric + 3 metres of coordinating bias binding (20mm or 25mm width). Quilting cottons are also suitable but my advice is not to spend too much or choose a special fabric for any first make – save those for when you have perfected the fit!

Your particular fabric requirements can be clarified at the time of booking.

We will take a 1 hour break half way through & tea &  biscuits will be provided.

Gift Vouchers are available for this workshop on the gift voucher page. These are valid for 12 months & as well as making a nice gift the lucky recipient will be able to choose their own date to attend this workshop.

*Capable Sewer – for this workshop you will need to be comfortable with using a sewing machine to sew straight & zig-zag stitches & able to consistently follow a seam line as accuracy is required when sewing French seams & adding the neck & sleeve binding.
