Sewing Project – Drawstring Bag Pictorial

Project: Lined drawstring bag

Materials required: cotton fabric x2, cord, thread

Time required: 2 hrs

This pretty but simple drawstring bag is one of the first things I teach my beginner sewists. It is a great practise project for sewing straight seams & learning how to create box corners.

It looks very professional as it is fully lined & can be used to create all sorts from gift bags to laundry bags – depending on the size of fabric rectangles used. In this example I started of with A4 size fabric pieces & finished with a bag that is approx. 20cm tall & 10cm wide.

There are lots of great tutorials out there for making many similar variations of a drawstring bag but this is the method I have developed for my lessons. My pupils have been asking for ages for a tutorial to guide them through repeating this project, so I hope this pictorial approach fits the bill.

I’m hoping that this format will be nice & easy to view on whatever device you are using & will also print out very easily. Please let me know what you think.

I often make these pouches as gift bags & I’m told they are always useful – so much better than wrapping paper! This is a great little project for some ‘sewing me-time’ – enjoy!
