Sewing lessons for age 8 to 18

I learnt to use a sewing machine at the age of 7 or 8 and continued to do a lot of sewing throughout my teenage years. I had lots of fun making clothes, bags and all sorts of presents. When I returned to serious sewing in my thirties I was really surprised how much I remembered and instinctively knew to do. For this reason I love to hear of young people showing an interest in sewing and enjoy teaching them on a one-to-one or sew-with-a-friend (lesson for two) basis, from the age of eight.

The lessons follow the same format and projects as my lessons for adults but to encourage young sewers I offer an additional 25% to the cost of adult lessons (for ages 8 to 18).

Here are some examples of how this could work:

Introductory Lesson, 2 hours – One-to-One, £30 / Sew-with-a-Friend (for 2), £45
Getting to know the sewing machine & threading up. Practise controlling the speed & holding your direction with the 2 most used stitches – straight & zig zag. Complete this practise by making an appliquéd pin cushion so that you leave your first lesson with an item you have created!

Starter Course, 6 hours (3 x 2 hours) – One-to-One, £76.50 / Sew-with-a-Friend (for 2), £115
Combine the introductory lesson with 2 further projects that practise and build on sewing techniques, making a lined drawstring pouch and a zipped purse. Both of which are fun to replicate for further practise at home.

Holiday Course, 18 hours (6 x 3 hours) – One-to-One, £216 / Sew-with-a-Friend (for 2), £324
For beginners this course would begin with the 6 hours starter course followed by 12 hours of sewing lesson time on projects such as cushion covers, bags, alterations and simple clothes. For those with previous sewing experience we can work out an 18 hour course to suit their needs, such as a comprehensive introduction to dressmaking and using patterns.

All of these lessons can be booked through my online diary by picking a one-to-one or sew-with-a-friend appointment time for the first lesson and letting me know the details of your booking in your request. I will apply the discounts before sending the invoice.

If you would like to know more or discuss alternative options please contact me on [email protected] or by using the pop-up contact form below.

I do ask that an adult stays present for under 12s. You can take a comfy seat, drink tea and eat biscuits and I have lots of nice sewing magazines and books that you can peruse.
